Gonarezhou, The Place of Elephants<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Yes, I know, the word “Gonarezhou” is quite a mouthful, seeming like just a bunch of letters scrambled together. So, to help you pronounce it, repeat after me: “Gonna-Re-Zhoo”.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It means “place of elephants”, and although we unfortunately can’t promise dinosaur sightings, you can enjoy prehistoric-looking elephants, rhinos, and crocodiles instead! <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Southern Africa’s Stripped Back Safari Star<\/span><\/h2>\n

Gonarezhou National Park is located in the southeast corner of Zimbabwe, bordering <\/span>Mozambique<\/span><\/a>, and is the country’s second-largest national park. <\/span><\/p>\n

It’s massive and <\/span>absolutely<\/span> wild. <\/span>In fact,<\/span> <\/span>it’s one of the most authentic safari experiences you get on our continent.<\/span> <\/span>If you want to <\/span>really<\/span> lose yourself in Mother Nature’s untamed beauty with no restraints, then this is a dream come true for you.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

As it’s so remote and rugged, we recommend a fly-in safari with a charter flight from Harare International Airport to a private airstrip near the national park. We don’t recommend self-drives here, as you’re <\/span>really<\/span> heading into the belly of the wild.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A Glimpse of Gonarezhou’s Jurassic-Like Landscapes <\/span><\/h3>\n

When I said this national park is reminiscent of prehistoric times, I meant it. There are very few places in the world with such a variety of untouched ecological spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Picture <\/span>impresive<\/span> reddish and white sandstone cliffs<\/span>, <\/span>overlooking sweeping Serengeti-like grasslands dotted with giraffes, nyalas, impalas and other wildlife roaming free. <\/span>Next moment<\/span>, you’re surrounded by woodlands, nyala berry trees, and winding rivers <\/span>in between<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

There are more than 493 plant species, of which 333 are woody <\/span>species<\/span>, and 160 are herbaceous <\/span>species<\/span>.<\/span> However, I can’t help feeling there might be some species out there we are yet to discover<\/span>…<\/span> So, put on your best explorer hat for a Gonarezhou National Park safari! <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What Wildlife Can I See on a Gonarezhou National Park Safari?<\/span><\/h3>\n

When<\/span> on a Gonarezhou National Park safari<\/span>, you’ll likely never encounter anyone else<\/span>.<\/span> It’s <\/span>just<\/span> so vast and such an off-the-beaten-track destination that you’ll feel like you have it all to yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the name suggests, <\/span>you can see lots of elephants as it has<\/span> a large population.<\/span> And, yes, you can also see the rest of the Big 5, namely the lion, leopard, rhino, and African buffalo. <\/span><\/p>\n

On land, <\/span>there are<\/span> 89 large mammal and 61 small mammal species <\/span>roaming<\/span> free here.<\/span> There are also 116 reptiles, 34 amphibians, and more than 50 fish species. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It also makes sense that you can see some endangered species since this is such a unique setting. <\/span>For example, the black rhino, African wild dog, lappet-faced vulture, and the near-endemic turquoise killifish are all found here.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Save River is a popular gathering place for wildlife, and we love that the water can look quite <\/span>clear<\/span>, so you can easily spot those species lurking beneath the surface! <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
